What this map shows
SDS is the design spectral response acceleration at short periods — the term that sets the horizontal force most equipment is designed and certified for. Values are for the ASCE 7-22 default site class, the envelope of Site Classes C, CD and D used where a site’s soil properties are not known.
They come from the U.S. Geological Survey data release behind the 2020 NEHRP Provisions and ASCE/SEI 7-22 (doi:10.5066/P9I0R4O6), on grids of 0.05° in the lower 48 and 0.01° to 0.10° elsewhere.
For design, use the ASCE Hazard Tool at your exact site. This map is for screening and comparison: it reads values from the nearest grid point rather than interpolating to a coordinate, and it assumes the default site class.
